Five main elements that are included in my novel, Catching Fire, are conflict, conclusion, plot, suspense and foreshadowing.
- suspense
- plot
- conclusion
- conflict
- foreshadowing
To me the most important element in a story would be suspense. The reason I believe this is because suspense is what gives the reader the "on-edge" feeling. It is a quality of a book that makes you want to keep reading. It builds in order to make those final moments, no matter how short, the most memorable moments of the book. My book strongly includes suspense because it uses fast paced action leaving the reader hooked. Each page is filled with different, yet unexpected conflicts that the character in my story must try to overcome. Another reason my book is suspenseful is because it uses foreshadowing; a technique which writers use a lot to create suspense. This technique is used often in my book. For instance, when the main character Katniss is at the ceremony held by the people from distract 11.
p. 61 "Then, from somewhere in the crowd, someone whistles Rue's four-note mocking jay tune. The one that signalled the end of the workday in the orchards. The one that meant safety in the arena."
This sentence shows suspense and foreshadowing because we know that the rebellion will take place. The people from distract 11 are using Rue's song to show that they will fight for what they believe in so they can get what they deserve. They are also proving to the Capitol that children of the future should live in a better society and most of all have hope for all families living in the distract. The suspense for the reader is intense here because we don't know what the Capitols are going to do with the Distract as they're act of bravery, but I know that this will bring a lot of tension getting many killed, maybe even Rue's parents.
