R E F L E C T I O N:
... The poem, " I, Too, Sing America" by Langston Hughes was written as a response to the poem "I Hear America Singing" by Walt Whitman. It relates to the second part of my tapestry theme because it reveals that no two people think alike. In the first poem by Walt Whitman, who was a white man living in America, expresses his thoughts and perceptions of America by saying, " I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear/Those of the mechanics, each one singing his as it should be built and strong." (Whitman, 1) The way he encounters America is influenced by his life experiences which may be completely different from how someone else may view America. For example, Langston Hughes, who is a black man living in America when racism played a big role in the way society progressed, wrote a response to I Hear America Singing. He thinks that there are many others who contribute to America not only the ones he has listed. He states, " I, too sing America. I am the darker brother." (Hughes,1) This shows that we all have different judgments based on who we are and our own value systems...
